Anybody remember Mojo Nixon?

Mojo Nixon has his own show on Sirius Outlaw Country. It's the only country station I like- they play Hank III, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, and Rebel Meets Rebel.

I didn't realize he was that cool, he always sounds like a drunken hillbilly on the radio.

I probably is a drunken hillbilly now, but back in the late 80s-early 90s, he was the shit. I've never seen a man who could control an audience like that. He had the charisma of a first rate evangelical preacher, without the bullshit.

One of the coolest things he ever did was put together a full on countrified R&B review with Dave Alvin from The Blasters and Country Dick Montana from The Beat Farmers. The were called The Pleaseure Barons. I've tried, but can't find their shit online

Was he a country artist back then? I'm fairly country myself, or at least I can speak the language when out of town, but I can't understand a damn word he says on his Sirius show.

I know he's good buddies with Kinky Friedman- he was a regular guest on the show in the run-up to the election.

if you like country and rock n roll, you owe it to yourself to check out The Beat Farmers and The Blasters as well. I've found great live clips of both On YouTube. As for Mojo, I guess you could call him country, Country Punk Folk Rockabilly protest music.

Another cool band to check out from that genre is Buck Naked and the Bare Bottom Boys.

Country punk! That sounds awesome- like Hank III. I'll check that out when I get home and can crank it up like it deserves.

Speaking of country punk, there was a great country punk band that used to play Austin all the time called The Hickoids. If you can ever find their album entitled "Waltz Acrossdress Texas", pick it up. You will not be disappointed.

What was the big song tha Mojo Nixon put out in the late 80's? something like "Debbie Gibson is Pregnant with my two-headed Love Child"?

Mojo did have a few novelty 'hits.' The first one was Elvis is Everywhere, then came Debbie Gibson is Pregnant (with my two headed lovechild) and finally was Don Henley Must Die.

He played a show in my town shortly after that song came out and the day of the show, someone called in a death threat to the club. When Mojo got on stage that night he told the audience that his life was being threatened by a crazed Don Henley fan and added "What's he going to do, BORE me to death?"

Fucking classic.
